U.S.C.G. Phenolic Fiberglass Grating

Gridwalk Phenolic Gratings are designed to be the best product for life safety during a fire. It's non-flammability characteristic enables it to withstand direct flame for an extended period of time without sustaining major structural damage.

Gridwalk Type P is a fiberglass reinforced grating, manufactured using a premium grade fire retardant phenolic resin. Independent laboratory reports have shown a flame spread rating of 0 and a smoke index of 0 based on ASTM E-84.

Approved in Accordance with USCG PFM 2-98 for Level 2 & Level 3 Service Level 2 Gratings

Gratings meeting the L2 performance criteria are intended to be satisfactory for use in open deck areas where groups of people are likely to assemble such as temporary safe refuge and lifeboat embarkation areas. In addition, they are acceptable for all Level 3 (L3) services and functions.

Testing - To be qualified as L2, the gratings shall meet the test requirements of L3 gratings and in addition, meet the following test requirements:

Post fire load test - the grating must carry a load greater than or equal to a uniform load of 4.5 kN/m2 (94 lbf/ft2) without failing.

Level 3 Gratings - Gratings meeting the L3 performance criteria are intended to be satisfactory for use in egress routes and any areas that may require access for firefighting, rescue or emergency operations during exposure to, or shortly after exposure to a transitory hydrocarbon or cellulosic fire.

Testing - To be qualified as L3, the FRP grating should be subjected to both pre-load and post load tests and conditions:

An ASTM E-119 Furnace test run with phenolic grating specimen right next to steel grating specimen for 60 minutes. The specimens are then cooled and loaded with a 40kg mass at center of span. The ASTM Test is run again and the gratings cannot collapse under the 40 kg mass load.

Typical Applications

  • Onshore & Offshore Oil Refineries
  • Tunnel Walkways
  • Train Decks
  • Ships (LNG & Chemical Tankers)

Benefits of Phenolic Grating

  • Low Smoke Index
  • Low Toxic Fume Emissions
  • High Temperature Resistance (300° F)
  • NORSOK 19mm max openings
  • High Corrosion Resistance
  • Low Maintenance

American Grating is able to manufacture any of our pultruded and molded gratings using a Phenolic Resin System, however, only 2 types of gratings are U.S. Coast Guard approved:

  • 1-1/2” deep x 60% Open Pultruded I-bar
  • 1-1/2” deep x 1-1/2” x 6” Superspan Molded Grating

Testing for Phenolic Grating

  • U.S. Coast Guard Level 2 and Level 3 Acceptance - For both Pultruded and Molded Grating
  • Standard 406 Method 2023 Federal Burn Test
  • ASTM E-84-00a
  • ASTM D635-91 Burning Rate Test
  • Smoke and Toxic Fume Emissions

American Grating’s Phenolic Gratings have obtained U.S. Coast Guard approval surpassing both Level 2 and Level 3 tests. The USCG test requires the sample grating to be exposed to 927°C (1700° F) for one hour as per ASTM E-119, adjacent to a comparable steel grating. American Grating’s Phenolic Molded Fiberglass Grating carried 140 psf uniformed load during the test, exceeding the requirement of 94 psf by a factor of 1.49.
